Of the the following substances, why are (a) and (c) the most soluble in water? Thanks

    a.) C2H5OH
    b.) N2
    c.) C6H12O6
    d.) C6H14

They can form hydrogen bonds with the water molecules, making them soluble. I assume

    A) Chemical formula suggests ethanol. Alcohol functional group, which is capable of forming hydrogen bonds with water.

    C) I'm going to guess that this one is glucose, and not some convoluted compound. Glucose has a number of hydroxyl groups capable of forming hydrogen bonds.

The cyclical ether i.e. CH2 - O - CH2 - O etc. in a massive polyetheric hexane type ring would have the formula of C6H12O6 but wouldn't hydrogen bond.

Neither would any of the molecules that have three ester groups.

    But I'm just being silly.

Its a glucose molecule so although its cyclic, it has a branched hydroxyl group so it make H bonds

We weren't told that it is glucose.
