If I'm chatting to a girl and I ask if she's doing anything on the weekend and she says no/doesn't have any plans, is that an invite for me to ask her out?

Yes, ask her if she wants to do something. She can only say no.

no i think it just means that she has no plans as of yet

but it does close the possibility that, upon you asking her out on a date (or something along those lines), she would say she can't meet you because she 'already has plans'

therefore grab the opportunity and strike whilst the iron is hot.

It usually means... she has no plans. Not a specific invitation for anything.

I think she wouldn't say that she has no plans unless she is open to the idea of doing something with you. If a guy I have no interest in going out with asked me if I had plans for the weekend, even if I didn't have any, I would say that I have lots of uni work to catch up with... just to avoid having to say no if he actually proposes to do something together.

But then again, that may just be me.

You don't need an invite to ask her out, just do it.
