Pressure flow hypothesis for how plants move solutions. The contents of the phloem is highly pressurized, much like a firefighter's water hose, in order to move sap around the plant structure. Puncturing the phloem would cause an exit for the sap, with the pressure exerted on the sap from other areas causing the sap to flow into a low pressure area.

An analogy would be poking holes in a garden hose whilst someone is watering the plants - water starts to squirt out of the hose.
