So I've made the University of Salford my firm offer and I wanted to apply for accommodation early incase spaces filled up quickly, but the thing is; they want £500 (£200 deposit and £300 rental payment) in order for me to have a room???

What exactly is your question? All accommodations and properties in life require a deposit. As long as you don't break/damage anything you get the deposit back! Some places also require the first months rent up front, though is this definitely university accommodation?

yeah this is my accommodation. I just wasn't aware that I had to pay up front right NOW and I was wondering if this is normal

Guess it depends on place to place. In Leeds out system is different, and isn't first come first served, so we only paid our deposit after results day and no upfront rent.

However I'm presuming Salford is first come first serve? In which case they take the deposit to secure your room, otherwise they could have loads of students deciding they don't fancy it any more, leaving them with empty rooms! They obviously have to give it all back if you don't actually end up studying there for whatever reason.

But yeah, I had to borrow the deposit money off my step-dad because I had no money
