Are we talking about halls of residence only or other options too, and 'nicest' just being the quality of the rooms/building or things like the atmosphere and location too?

Like halls of residence. And including everything: nicest room, atmosphere etc.
Generally I think St Salvator's (Sallies) is probably the most sought after - lovely building and central location, and the Kate and Wills reputation attracts some people too. I don't know what the rooms are like but I've never heard anything bad about them! All of the standard catered halls are nice buildings and good locations (except Gannochy is a bit grim, as are some of the Uni Hall buildings). Agnes Blackadder is infamously quite an unfriendly atmosphere and Sallies does have a bit of a reputation for housing the rich pricks (obviously this is all generalising though!). DRA have nice apartments but they're quite a trek away.
The cheaper options like Albany Park and Andrew Melville leave a bit to be desired for the buildings and rooms, but I'm in Melville and the people I've met and the hall spirit have been the most important part, and the rooms aren't bad at all, just dated.
Everything is perfectly habitable and I barely know anybody who didn't like where they ended up even if it wasn't their first choice! Since only the cheaper halls can be applied for specifically, it's best not to set your sights on one particular place.
