    Hi!

I am afraid I have to ask at that point. I got an offer from both uni's. My main question is: Which is the "best choice" (I know its not that easy question).Pros and cons from someone who studying there?

It depends what you want out of the course. Overall, Essex is the weakest unless you're into networking, where they are strong.

Lancaster is a fine department, with a good human-computer interaction and mobile systems group, for one. Lancaster is great if you like the outdoors too, but is probably with Essex the least 'happening' place. Campus based university...only downside highly exposed to the elements.

Cardiff is a capital city, with all that that brings. The department is fine, but has its weaknesses, e.g. Mobile tech and HCI are both weak, whereas its large systems engineering work...top notch. Has a fragmented city centre location.

So Lancaster and Cardiff are almost opposite flavours...

Swansea is the cheapest place to live, good outdoors stuff but also not as sleepy as Essex or Lancaster. It has strong visualisation, HCI and safety-critical research groups...so a bit like Lancaster but more visualisation and safety critical work. It also has probably the best placements team I've ever worked with (I worked there seven years ago). Campus based...new tech campus as of September I believe? More science-based than Lancaster or Cardiff overall, but still practical.

I hope that helps...the idea that there's one scale of good is pretty inaccurate in CS there are at least four major flavours of department ...the wrong flavour will disappoint regardless of quality,
