Why do my piercings smell?

Seeing as the Body Mod FAQ seems to be rather messed up, I thought I'd post this as a separate thread :s-smilie:.

As you can see, I'm having a bit of my problem with my six piercings; they all smell. Basically, I have a year and a half old lobe piercing, a 10month old eyebrow piercing, two 7 month cartilage, a four month tragus and a two month navel.

However, they all seem to smell :s-smilie: The only way I can really describe it is a kind of cheesy smell :s-smilie: Whatever way, it's not particularly nice :s-smilie: Cleaning them doesn't seem to do anything - I've just cleaned them all no less than half an hour ago, yet my tragus piercing smells already :s-smilie:. It's not a smell that can be smelt by other people, but it's not nice :s-smilie:. I clean them all at least once a day, so I dunno if it could be lack of cleaning.

I don't think it's an infection, as there's no pussing or anything - just a smell.

Do I have to take them all out? :s-smilie:

Thanks

piercings smell. It's just something that happens
I found that my lobes were worse when I stretched them.
The only body piercing I've noticed smelling myself is my nipple (out of nose, tongue, lobes, tragus). Although I'm still healing the nipple.

Wash with unscented soap maybe? Sometimes the "nice" scents of shower gel/soap turn manky when mixed with moisture/sweat.

hmmm i don't know about my cartilage smelling but i know it was swollen for a while and had a bump. even though i was cleaning, as my ear is super curved (or at least where the piercing is) i wasn't able to get all the dirt out so that was what was causing it to smell.so i took a long time trying to get every speck of dirt out with savlon spray and water. the next day the bump had reduced in size.

whats i'm saying is try giving your piercings a thorough cleaning.spend at least 15min on each one, try and see if you can find any trapped dirt.
also it might be that you just don't heal well or you're rejecting? i don't know. try posting on BME and see if you get any replies. oh and try juno or katie (i think) as well, they might some more answers.

hope they get better soon brimmy :hugs:

Make sure you clean the jewellery too. Pop them all into boiling salt water and give them a scrub. Once your piercing's clean, pop them back in and you should not have any sort of odour....

Yeah, I do that with my eyebrow and lobe. Only problem is, I can't actually remove the rest of them  Don't know how  and bellybutton needs to be left, removing it will agitate it.

ear cartilage. goes through cartilage (a type of 'soft bone') instead of just flesh. e.g. the top bit of your ear.

Piercings do tend to smell. However, I'm surprised they smell immediately after cleaning them...I take out my plugs & clean them & my ears with soap and water every day or two and they very rarely have any smell, and I've never noticed my lobes, cartilage, navel or nostril piercings smelling at all.

What are you washing with, just soap & water? It could be the jewellery you have in them, if it's low quality. However, it could just be your crap luck that your piercings are destined to smell. Haha. For stretched ears, organic jewellery tends to work well to stop smelling, but if you have nice titanium jewellery in the others then I'm not sure what to suggest really.
