Utrecht

Does any1 imagine how much total score such unies like or particularry Utrecht ask for ib students? there is nothing mentioned in their site, and imo utrecht is a nice mediocore university within europe, also very good geographical position 0.5h brusell 1.5h paris tt:smile:.

I personally hate uk climate so id like to apply other countries:smile:) also was thinking of Bocconi but it's even worse than Utrecht. Any comments?

Most Dutch universities require little more than an IB diploma pass, so look at getting at least 4s in everything.

Btw having lived in Holland for the past 3 years I can tell you: do NOT expect a better climate than that of the UK, in Holland rain is as much a part of your life as homework.

I would think its 32 - I dunno why, at least I know that Switzerland requires that as a standard....My friend applied to Maastricht and he needs to get a 24, so I think it shouldn't be too hard:P

Well, it depends...Normally, dutch universities do not look at your diploma score, but your subjects...So, if you want to study engineering, they want you to take Maths HL. If you take Maths SL and get 45 points, you would not be admitted to an engineering programme directly, whereas if you take Maths HL and get 24 points, you would definitely get into engineering. In a nutshell, the criterion are known. If you fulfill those criterion, you get an unconditional offer, and if you do not fulfill, then you must sit an exam for that specific subject. For example, in order to be admitted to a Dutch-taught medicine programme, you have to take Dutch A1, Maths SL, Chemisty SL, Physics SL and Biology HL. If you don't take any of these subjects, then you must sit a seperate exam set by the university.

Furhtermore, for popular subjects such as dentistry, psychology and medicine, since there are more applicant than available places, a lottery is done annually. Only people who fulfill the criterion can apply to the lottery, i.e if you take the required subjects at IB (or you pass the necessary exams set by the university, when you don't take required subjects at IB), then you can apply to the lottery...If you win the lottery, then you get enrolled at your university. So, they don't consider your academic successes or your motivation, but it's just pure luck...If you don't win the lottery, then you can try your chance the next year, and if you still don't win the lottery in the 3rd year, then they will definitely give you the place. So, you can wait to win the lottery maximum 3 years...Some lucky people win it in the first time, some people win in the 3rd time...This is called Numerus clausus. But this is only for highly demanded subjects, like medicine...

Other than what I said above, it's very easy to get into a good university in the Netherlands, with an IB diploma. Nevertheless, most of the bachelor programmes are conducted in Dutch, with the exception of business-related programmes. For example, in order to study English Literature at the University of Utrecht, you must either take Dutch A1 or sit the Dutch Proficiency exam set by the university. The reason for this is that, some books are in Dutch...How funny, right?

But I like the idea that they don't look at your IB points, but your subject choices...For example, if you want to study Economics at the University of Utrecht, which is conducted in English, then you need an IB diploma with at least 24 points + Maths SL + English B...I think, If you have these subjects, they will definitely accept you.

Having said that, Economics is the only subject offered in English, at Utrecht...You cannot study humanities or social sciences in the Netherlands, unless you speak Dutch or go to a University College...

As far as I know, currently there are only two University College's in the Netherlands.

University College Utrecht

University College Maastricht

These are the only two, yet I expect in a short time, like in 2010 there will be new university colleges opened, like University College Amsterdam.

University Colleges recently became highly demanded...I know a number of people who got into University College Utrecht 3 years ago, with like 26 points. But suddently it became very competitive. Last year, people from my IB school were rejected, and they were brilliant students who scored more than 36 points...But they had a disadvantage! They were Dutch! I think these colleges want to be international, so they accept you with 32 points if you are from some countries who they don't have any students from. Now it's utterly hard to get into University College Utrecht. But, being a Lithuanian IB student is a great advantage for you. You may get into there with like 32 points, but most dutch students would not get there with 32 points  Last year, 2000 people applied, and they only admitted 200 people...So, it's indeed highly competitive...

But University College Maastricht is not as competitive as Utrecht. I got an offer from there after the interview with 31 predicted points. Though, I know that I had the advantage of being Turkish. They only have 1 student from Turkey.

Also, University College Maastricht does not have any campus, whereas University College Utrecht has one, and force you to live on, which costs 8000 euro per year...

There are too many details I can give you, but I don't exactly know what you want to study and where...

I hope it was a little bit helpful...

With blessings and love,
Schaak

I applied to Utrecht for entry in fall 2007 - and yesterday they sent me an acceptance letter - with no number of points i need to get from exams .... so i really do not know??? btw, i herd that utrecht is one of the best unis in europe actually with all of its nobel laureates and all ... so i dunno ... is it really just mediocre? aha - and yes i got into university college utrecht - now im waiting to see if ill be able to get some financial aid ...
Hi, I am Dutch and come from Utrecht (I currently live in Sweden) and I would like to say that Utrecht is the best city ever! Great city and good university. Many friends of mine attend their.

I would like to study Art-History their, so I tried to check the IB points to get in, but as I understad they will consider you if you have a passing diploma (24 points or more) and like said before you studied a subject that is required for the course. I also think that you need to have Dutch A1 to get in for sure. Anyway, Utrecht is good!!!

ok...i am Italian so I can tell you a bit about the IB diploma for Italian universities. as of now...the only Italian university that will accept the IB diploma officially is Universitá Bocconi di Milano. This is also the ONLY genuinely italian uni that offers courses in english (3 courses i believe). All other Italian universities do NOT offer courses in english. There are American Unis in Italy, years abroad and all of that..and I think there's an Art institute in Florence that offers some english things but thats about it. thus the IB Diploma is not directly recognised by any university other than Bocconi. You need to actually VISIT the university or phone [but this is very difficult considering the fact that no italian person correctly speaks english] and explain to them the situation. The institution will then have to receive a list of ''official" international diplomas and then 'officially' accept the IB diploma [to be honest...practically regardless of the marks]. I will say, though, that most Italian unis [except for Bocconi] will not accept you unless you have IB Italian A1 HL.

mhm, what can you say about bocconi ? is it one f the top universities in italy or not ?

Isnt Erasmus university in Rotterdam also a well reputed university with courses in English? I dont know about their requirements though..
I think you just need the diploma (24 points) to get into Erasmus. I got an unconditional offer with just predicted grades. (Didn't accept it obviously)

alright...yeah Bocconi is consider the #1 Italian uni for Business and Economics. it IS a great school but it is also VERY difficult....no one can understand how difficult it is until you have experienced it [my sister's friend studies there, so I know how much work it is].

as for applying to Uni of Bologna or w/e....I think the easiest way to apply is the IB [because it takes less time to officialise/translate...and yeah get it translated directly from the IB if u want].

Erasmus, u need 24 points on ur IB or an equivalent secondary school certificate [plus u have to take the TOEFL unless ur from UK, US or Australia]

uhm....Spain has the American University of Barcelona or Madrid [look into it]

France has ICIS and EBS. Italy has EBS as well. [EBS]. Germany has nothing cuz it sux...and uhm..yeah..thats bout it i think.

Germany has nothing because it sucks? What kind of judgement is that?Ever heard of the University Of Karlsruhe? And Passau? And all the other American Universities which have campuses in Germany.

In Switzerland there are great universities but for most of them you will need to know how to speak german. They all require 32 points minimum excluding bonus points and some of them don't accept theatre arts and art points. If you want to do medicine you have to do an entrance test. For the Business school in St. Gallen (One of the best with LSE) you will need to pass an entrance test too I believe, a friend didn't get admitted with 40 points. Then there is the University of Lugano which offers Computer Science in English and the rest of the courses are in Italian. In Lugano, the Italian speaking part of Switzerland, there is also the Franklin College, an American college.

In the French speaking part there is the Ecole Polytechnique de Lausanne, I believe that there too you need to take an entrance exam along with your 32 points (they design the Alinghi sale ships) and the courses are in French. In Geneva there is Webster University, another American University, and my sister happens to be in the admissions panel of Webster.

Then there is also the well known ETHZ in Zurich which is probably the best Polytechnique college in Europe if not in the world where there too you'll need an entrance exam I believe.

Needless to say in universities like ETHZ, in some courses, after the first year 80% of the people drop out or give up, no I am not kidding.

As for fees in Switzerland they are really small, about 6000 Swiss Francs a year for a foreigner and 2000 for Swiss citizens, the cost may vary from uni to uni but they are generally very affordable and are great unis. I am talking about Swiss Unis, not american unis in Switzerland.

Uhm....i was ..K I D D I N G. i just didnt know anything from Germany.

anyways, as u mention Webster...it is also in Leiden, The Netherlands. I must say, I have attended sessions there [and at least the one in leiden] it seems of a very very low level. Would not really consider it unless you do horrendously on your IBs. Positive thing, though, is that you can do a year on each campus {Netherlands, Switzerland, Singapore, Thailand, USA}.

Well he said he wanted a mediocre university? Yeah most people that go to Webster are rich kids with no brains my sister tells me.
