Whopee I was glad to see this thread!
Makes a change to all the Oxford/Cambridge rants.

Yep, I am off to Portsmouth for definite after having firmly accepted my conditional offer....and I can't bloody wait!!!

It looks like such a wkd place to spend your student years- loads of places to go out, big green areas..oh and the beach!
The Tiger Tiger bar they have there is wkd...really plush and OBLY for students.

Plus Gunwharf Quays is wjd for shopping and because the shops are all designer outlets it is VERY cheap!

As in a pair of French Connection jeans costs about £20 when they'd normally be about £80!...anyway, enough about shopping.

The accommodation looks great to and hopefully I'll be in the new James Watson halls which are reght smack bam in the middle of town.
Precisely 30 secs walk from one of the best clubs in Portsmouth!
Blimey I getting myself all excited!

i'm not going to the uni but i live in pompey. have done all my life. there aren't that many sailors around. in fact u hardly notice them unless some foreign ship boards in the harbour for a while. like most places there are good areas and bad areas and the people are down to earth. I don't really think that the plae is that big or has that much going one. but club wise there are t main areas for nightclubs. one in gunwharf quys in old portsmouth which is a newer area but more expensive nad mainly for over 21. then u got the clubs down the seafront which are cool but really crowded and more likely to get fights. I wanna change of environment so i'm off to london in october.

anyway have fun!

hmmm i had a friend from cyprus who said they didnt like it but he was a rich kid and his dad bought him his own house and car outside the town. he didnt socialise with the others and didnt get on.

good to hear no saliors though, big relief they worry me
I live near Pompey and don't be worried about the sailors. My brother in law is in the Navy there and a lot of them (including the girls) are quite hot!

However you have to be careful if you go out clubbing in Southsea, there has been a LOT of violence there so I don't advise wandering about.

The shops are great, but don't go to their McDonalds because it's the worst in hants. Gunwharf Quays is fantastic for cheap designer gear and the cinema is good as well.

Around Portsmouth you've got a lot, you have Fratton with the football stadium, as well as some cool alternative shops. You've got Southsea with a slightly more relaxed shopping atmosphere and then you have Commercial Road which has any shop you can imagine. My favourite is Withit! Plus someone always puts washing up lidquid in the fountain. If you want fancy dress clothes go to U-Need-Us. You can get nearly anything there.

The place has 3 good places for gigs, The Wedgewood Rooms (The Wedge), The Guildhall (Aka Skater Central) and the Pyramids (Fantastic swimming pool). A lot of great bands play there and it's very easy to get round the back and meet them.

There are a load of pubs too, my favourite being the Registry and Walkabout.

A lot of my friends have gone to Portsmouth Uni' and they are really enjoying it.
You can wake up on Saturday morning and think "hmm what shall I do today?" and jump on the hovercraft and go to the Isle of Wight.

Hope this helps

Oh has there? It doesn't strike me as the type of place for violence, but I suppose every area has at least some.

yeah, i wouldn't worry about sailors... they don't venture into town much if they are in port - and even if they do they're probaly more scared of you lol. I went to Flares one evening when it was full of sailors and they were soo funny - they all had like shaved heads and huge sideburns, and anchor tattoos - i kid you not.

you're best to look out for the locals actually, especially on saturdays and sundays - they seem to resent students and therefore make trouble.

But on the whole its a great place to live for all the shopping etc lol.

ooooh, can't wait to go back next year - you'll all have amazing times! Hope the summer goes quickly

i have a question -

you know the internet connection in the halls? how do you get it? is it totally free? my mother is starting to bug me about it for some reason
Usually you just have to pay them about £10 or so at the beginning of the year and you get free internet after that

its free if you have normal dial up - but you're limited to 8 hours a day - which was plenty enough for me. Getting broadband costs about 2.50 per week for the slower connection (about 140kb - I think) and 3.00 for the faster (500kb) connection. I don't beleive there was a download limit either.

Portsmouth ROCKS!!!

James Watson Hall is meant to be really shabby though, apparently Rees Hall is the place to be!

Anyways, within the main campus of the uni you got the shops, restaurants, theatre, clubs..what more could you want in one street?!

no! James Watson is cool! It's nice to have proper flats and a HUGE kitchen... Rees is like a hotel - and I personally wouldn't plump for catered. Tho the building from the outside looks nice - looking onto the common. But its rainy/wet/miserable most of the academic year so the few weeks when its warm don't really make up for having to trudge around in the wet to get to classes lol.

Hey Sparkler,
They asked for photocopies of our GCSE and A Level Certificates not the real thing so I'm assuming they don't send the photocopies back.
Have you heard about your accommodation yet?
