I'm looking to rent a room and need some advice on the town. I've noticed that the majority of the central locations seem to look rough council estates. Many of the cheapest vacancies also seem to reside there. Are these all of the areas that I should avoid? I don't need to live in a posh area; I just want to be somewhere where I can walk outside.

Also, how does referencing work? Do I give them the address of the house I lived in during uni?

Thanks. Do you know of any places to look for rooms? Atm, I'm just using SpareRoom. Should I consider a local agency?
