Rammstein; do the fans really understand?

there has been much debate concerning rammstein and the lanuage difference. but what is more important? enjoying the music or being able to understand it?

whenever i read an artical on rammstein, the journalist always passes a comment on how it is unfortuante that the english fans dont understand.

when i first herd anything by rammstein i was soo taken in my the music, the culture and the passion for the german language. sure till can speak perfect english, but its more authentic if they sang in german.

the internet provides translations for all language problems, and the majority do point out sexual inuendo ect.

in my opinion, people who are open to other languages and will take the time out of their lives for basque in anothers way of life should be praised and i salute you \../^_^\../

I got into Rammstein while I was doing my A-levels so I understand pretty much every song they do. But then they sing in very pure, easy German (maybe pure isn't the right word ) Take an american band like AFI, I love their music but I can hardly understand a word of what they're singing!
Music is for there for people to enjoy, regardless of language or culture. Why must the question be raised if they understand, when it's really of no matter? I guess if you had a 10 year old who knew the lyrics exactly and the message behind the lyrics were very dark/sexual/etc, then that could raise issues if he/she went abroad etc. But since it's a foreign language to British people, they don't know what it means, or probably can't even say it properly. But I have no idea how many of those people would translate it through the internet.

I love listening to world music, whether it be eurotrance stuff (that Basshunter guy from Sweden is awesome), from Middle-Eastern and Asian music (I love Mayada Al-Hennawy, Lata Mangeshkar, Aitha Bin Tanaf, etc), to J-Pop (Like Utada) and more, and I think the whole concept of keeping it in the other language is one of the best aspects of it. It takes away half of the beauty of the song having it subtitled or translated for you.

I'm a Rammstein fan myself and when I first got into them I wasn't at all interested in the lyrics. It might sound odd but I wasn't. The music alone was enough to draw you in. A couple of months later I started to read translations and I was quite surprised about the things they were singing about... I often got completely different emotions coming through from the music alone. And I'm cool with that. I think we're supposed to give music our own meaning anyway.

I started listening to Rammstein in year 10, and I still dont know the lyrics...I know the German but I dont think I really need to learnt teh English when they sing in German!

Yeah, I can sing along in German but I don't know what half of the words mean. :p:

I didn't even know they didn't sing in English - don't think I've ever listened to them :hmmmm:

Just listened to a clip on iTunes. Sounds like a Eurovision song :s-smilie:

There's something very wrong with your ears.

The lyrics are puerile *******s, but the music is amazing. Frankly, I don't care what the words mean.

Ok, just listened to the whole thing on youtube. The instrumental part of the song is great.

The singer though...

:tumble:

I think the vocal melodies ruin the song.

You were clearly listening to something by James Blunt. Hehehe, I love Till's voice.
Reply 13
You do?? I think any bits where his voice goes fairly high-pitched just sounds ridiculous and that's what made me think of Eurovision - it's like a heavy rock song that goes wrong when he goes up high.

He doesn't sing any high notes in that song. I don't think he can reach them. Are you talking about the choir?
Reply 15
No. I mean high as in out of that extremely deep voice.

Meh, I just think it sounds stupid with such a backing.

When I first started listening to Rammstein, I understood practically no German, but I loved the music anyway.
Now I actually speak German, I love the music even more ^_^
I'm always a bit perplexed when people say the lyrics are rubbish  maybe I just have very low tastes but I think their lyrics are very good, very interesting. Particularly Moskau, Wilder Wein, Morgenstern, Ich Will, Spieluhr...I could carry on
