Never experienced homophobia, fortunately, but I did have a pretty tough time personally accepting that I was gay as a happy life had always been made out to be growing up, getting married to a boy and having kids and I was so sad that I wasn't going to have those things and therefore (in my mind) not lead a happy life but now I look back and realise how stupid I was being and that there are so many ways to love a long, happy and fulfilled life. So to anyone out there struggling with a similar thing, not even directly related to gender/sexuality, please remember that it does get better! (As cheesy as that sounds)
