When to apply for Retail/Food Summer jobs?

Mostly as the title says.

My local town has various stores/restaurants where I'm hoping to apply for a Summer job, since this year I have three months off before (hopefully) going to uni. Ideally I'd start work in early July.

I don't really have any experience with these things, so I was wondering when it would be best to apply, in either case of going and just asking to see the manager in person, or applying for an advertised vacancy online.

I go to a boarding school some way away from where I live, hence why I can't just take up a job before the end of term.

Thanks.
If you go to a boarding school you're probably stuck up and I retail employers don't tend to like that so just wait till you've finished uni

I would start applying now. For smaller businesses you'd like to work in its probably better to go in and ask as they are less likely to advertise online. For larger companies you should probably apply online as this is how they recruit most of their staff.

Just make sure they understand that you want to start in summer, and not now.
