What did the students, who got A*'s at A-Level do to earn their grades?

In general they revised and worked effectively and then applied themselves well in the exam..but I'm guessing that's a bit useless
Personally I just put a ton of time into half my A levels; the other half, which I scraped A*s in a bit, I put less time in but still made sure I knew what the mark schemes demanded, had practised a good amount of past questions, knew all key definitions/quotes (latter in the case of English Lit..) and, in the case of Physics, that I had a solid understanding of the material, as opposed to solely working on past papers.
