# Tangents and Normals: Differentiation watch

Well first you'd put 1 into the equation and find y.

Then use y-y1=m(x-x1)

Then differentiate y, you should probably collect the terms to be in a single bracket.

This will give you the gradient of the curve, to find the normal just find whatever value that is multiplied by your result for dy/dx to give -1.

Then use this new gradient to be your m in the equation.
