That's weird.. just checked Extra and almost all of the flagship courses still have vacancies on them.

What's up with that? *is confused* :s-smilie:

But I heard Swedish has a high standard of education? I mean the public education sector over there is quite reputed I think. I heard that some teachers in high school are MSc holders! Or is it Finland???

Hehe, the Swedish national system is c-r-a-p. That's as much as I know about it. In Malmö there is a skateboard-high-school, and near where I live you can go to a golf-high-school. In the same town as where I do IB there is a horse-high-school. As you can see hardly anyone does traditional subjects...

I confused it with Finland I guess.

If you check the staistics guide you would find that those flagship course normally have an applicant to place ratio if 7 to 1. Most probably in Science the quantity does not matter, but the quality. They may have a lot of applicants but the school may only want students with certain things, eg, AAA and A in a special subject. So they are going Extra to get more applicants. No harm in doing that.

What a very progressive country, educating horses is the way forward! Do they do IB or A levels?

*slaps knee*

I don't understand why biology isn't on extra... I thought it was a relatively unpopular subject in Imperial.

Lovely...

The cut off for Biology is ABB. There are definitely enough students with ABB hence the bio dept does not feel the pinch. For flagship courses at Imp such as EEE and CS, the depts really cannot take in with anyone less than AAA and A in maths, physics and perferably further maths. Hence even the applicant per place ratio may be higher for EEE and CS than for Biology, effectively, the EEE and CS depts are having fewer applicants to choose from, since the buttom line is so much higher.

Btw... The_Luvbster, can we just have peace?
Does anyone know how hard the maths and computer science course is? especially the programming part to it.

Very. On some accounts, around 70% of the normal Maths degree, and 70% of the normal computing degree. Programming is something you either get, or you don't, so depends on that really.

Ohh, i always thought maths and computer science was a softer option to straight maths, i guess i was wrong then. But what do you mean programming is something you get or you don't? i need to get as much information for my brother.

It either clicks and you can move forward pretty rapidly or you'll bang you head against a wall for hours to get the simplest of things working. Clearly progress is much slower in the latter and can be fairly depressing if all those around you are zooming ahead.

SO your basically saying programming is very logical?
Reply 133
Logic programming is. :p:

And no, sometimes it can be quite mind bending.. I know lots of mathematicians who had a very hard time trying to understand recursion.
Bad.. i always thought maths and computing are so closely related that they are inseperable
Econometrician , what is your background? Which U did you graduate from?

Yeh, lol.
Then what course is your Brother studying at Imperial? I know he does maths but what is the course title exactly... eg BSc Maths in Applied Physics...
