Im going to miss my exams. Can i get a resit in August?

Ok ive got a three exams on the 23rd and 24th (worst dates ever coz ive got tickets to Athens for the Champions League final). Ive come to the conclusion after two weeks of contemplating, that if allowed i will miss my exams to go to Athens. Note, i am only in my first year, so it wont be detrimental to my future.

Im saying allowed coz ive got no idea if i can do this. I know you can resit if you turned up and failed the module, but would not turning up make me ineligible for a resit?

Now i came to the decision yesterday, and ive got no idea what to do. I only found out last week that i was eligible for tickets, and well its been a study break since. Im thinking of going in tomorrow and just letting my lecturer know (if i find him) that i have to go to a 'emergency holiday'.

What steps do i need to take? Shall i just miss it without notice and apply for a resit in July?

P.S. Please no messages about going to the exams.

You'd be hung, drawn and quartered for doing that at my uni! Yes it's your first year etc but even so - university exams are not to be missed.

And if your uni is anything like mine, if you miss exams in may/june for whatever reason - when you come to sit them in August, the maximum mark you can get is 40% (that is unless you're re-siting them/sitting them for the first time due to mitigating circumstances)

And I'm just not quite sure that going to football match would go down at all well when filling in a mitigating circumstances form.

Personally think you need to sort your priorities out

It aint just your regular Saturday afternoon 'football match'. My priorities are straight, but things like this are sometimes once in a life time memories.

Why am i explaining this to a female?

Anyway now i know the max i can get is 40%, i got no other option. Ill be a fool to miss it now.

Ahhh. How can a timetable mess me up like this?

On the damn day! A 28 day exam window, and one of my 4 exams end up on the 23rd.

Unless you're going to be playing for Liverpool, education will serve you better in the long term.

And this is coming from someone who has stayed at university and given up the chance of taking part in national team sport so I do understand the dilemma.

No. I don't think anywhere would let you get away with that, it's unfair on the people who care about the exams.

:ditto: You can obviously miss exams if you're ill or for some other genuine extenuating cirumstance that can't be helped, but if you miss an exam to watch a football match (even if it is the Champions League final) I'm pretty sure you'd just fail the module. We got an email today about what to do if we miss an exam and even if you're ill, you have to fill in a mitigating circumstances report. As vickytoria77 said, I somehow doubt the tutor would be very impressed to read that you placed a higher priority on going to a football match than sitting an exam!
Yeah I doubt your tutor would be very happy

Save your effort, Milan are red hot at the moment

Brings back memories of me last year. Physics exam at 9am. Finished by 11am. Tube to waterloo at 12 then train to paris by 5pm   Was still worth it even though we lost. If theres anyway possible to go without endangering your marks, go. But don't mess up your life for a football match, even a champions league final.

Wow, got your priorities straight AND tactful to boot. A true all rounder.

Please don't categorise females as the only ones who couldn't give a toss about football, and think that missing anything for it shows a total lack of scope (it actually is just a game!), there are also the kind of thoughtful young men who after a year of university actually know important examination procedure.

I know how you're feeling. I've got exams on the 22nd, 23rd and 24th and if Man Utd had got through to the final I don't know what I would have done (I would have 100% have gotten a ticket). I even contemplated missing the exams myself to go but deep down I knew it would have been the most foolish thing I've done. But hey, it didn't come to that in the end. I'll just have to make do with going to Wembley :p: Anyway, just saying I sorta know what your going through and how tempting it is to miss your exams but I think you would be pretty stupid to do so, even if you are only in your first year. As for it being a once in a lifetime thing.. it's Liverpool. You've probably got more chance of seeing them in a European cup final in the future then I have with Man U

But hey, just ignore all that, I'm a girl, I don't know what I'm talking about
I missed an exam last year due to traffic, so i took it in August, didn't have to fill out any forms or anything, just emailed a tutor to explain, try to do well on the exams you can sit this month so that it makes your average for the year look better, one exam even at the pass mark of 40% wont effect your overall average too much if your doing 8/9 modules, you could still get a 2:1 foir the year ,and catch up on all the required material for your course resit during June and July.

I'm assuming you've paid fees and deposits for this match, personally i think you'd be better to attend the match it seems like the memories would be more than worth it.

I disagree completely, and reiterate what everyone else on the thread has said - do the exam.

Nothing about being female!

I was meant to be spending 5 days at the world's biggest event for my main interest/sport that I follow. Sadly I couldn't go due to having exams on the thursday and the following monday. So yes, I do know what it's like when you have change plans that have been life-long dreams

Once in a lifetime? It's the second time in two years!

And being blatantly sexist is going to help your situation how? The poster who recieved the comment was actually talking sense. Saying that you went to a football match would not go down well with the university, it's just common sense. You said "no comments about going to the exams" but you do know that it's pretty much impossible to ask people to reply in a particular way on a message board - if you post something, you open yourself to posts that tell you what you want to hear, and those that don't.

Glad that you're going to the exams anyhow. Hopefully (assuming you're supporting Liverpool) Kaka won't manage to run rings around everyone as he usually does.

Understand totally where ur coming from mate lol. I thought it was your A levels you were missing. If it was City and i got tickets nothing would stop me!!! But i suppose its not all that rare for liverpool, you might get another one soon
I have no sympathy to be honest....

it's a choice between important uni exams (don't care whether you're in your first year or not, they are still important), and a football match.

That's like comparing a tumour to a graze

It's a FOOTBALL match for crying out loud. Seriously, it is not a once in a lifetime opportunity. Football matches have been played since well before you were born, and will continue to be played for the rest of your life. You can go another time.

Just use your brain and put your studies first. Sell the tickets on ebay. Actually I think you were daft to buy them in the first place - you would have known that it was the exam period (even if you didn't know the exact dates of your exams). You would think you'd have thought "gee now, I'd better be revising around this time" instead of thinking "hmm I'm going to risk having an exam on the same day, or at least sacrifice some of my revision time, just so I can go to a football match".

*shakes head*.

Well ultimately at the end of the day it's your choice I guess, but I have to say I don't think it's a very difficult decision....it's your studies or a game....really now think about it.

I'm torn.

I mean personally I'm travelling across the country next weekend in the middle of my exam period to see The Who. So it would be hypocritical of me to tell you not to go to the match. But to be fair it was never on the cards that I would actually MISS an exam.

My gut instinct is sell the tickets.
