In a dramatic turnaround not echoed by Ofsted or the PISA rankings, The author of the good school guide declares private schools under threat from the state sector as never before...

UK state schools have improved so much that some private schools may go out of business, the Good Schools Guide says.
When the guide was first published in 1986, it recommended 10 state schools - 4% of its total. This year, about 300 schools (25%) are in the state sector.
Editor Lord Lucas said featured schools were chosen by parents who were more interested in sending their children to state schools now than in the past.
Surely it couldn't be that he's trying to make his publication more relevant to upper middle class parents who can't afford to keep up with the rapid rises in private school fees due to stagnant wages - but still want to feel less bad about being forced to choose state school.
