    Hi, it's due to two things i believe (this is from memory)

    1. Biomass being reduced through living and acting in the environment, this causes biomass to be lost through things such as excretion and so on (pooing!).

    2. Second of all when something dies it might decompose for several days, which reduces the biomass of the dead animal.

    Yeah, everything above, so faeces, CO2 from respiration, not the whole animal is eaten etc.
