What are the uses of antigens and where are they made?
Antigens are molecules that are capable of eliciting an immune response.

There are two types: heteroantigens which include pathogens like bacteria or viruses or other substances such as chemicals or pollen; and the self-made autoantigens. The body usually doesn't respond to autoantigens and antigens which cause immune responses are said to be immunogenic.

So what is the difference between antigens and receptor proteins?
In the most basic sense, an antigen is a molecule (usually a protein) that activates a host response in the form of antibodies. It's important to realise that pathogens don't just make antigens, and stick them on their cell wall for the sole purpose of surrendering themselves to the host's defences. They all serve intrinsic functions of the pathogen itself

Receptor proteins bind to molecules which result in a cascade of events inside the cell, with the end result being an up/deregulation of some gene or the other inside the nucleus. In theory, if a bacteria's receptor protein was able to induce a host response when it entered a human/animal, then that receptor protein would also be classed as an antigen.
