Do universities care much about school suspensions when deciding who to accept for their courses? I want to apply for medicine, academically I'm all good, but I recently got suspended for smoking weed on a school trip, will this affect unis decision on weather to accept me or not?

Won't the school give a reference on the UCAS form?

Yes they matter, because its one of the things that make you stand out as a person rather hna just a set of grades.

They cant and dont say anything negative, but it may eb obvious they are less enthusiastic than they might be about you.

Has a decision been made on your supsension? I assume your parents know. Smoking dope would smack of an inability to stick to rules, so what sort of Dr would you make if you had access to prescribing drugs?

What you should do is wait to see what the suspension decision is. Uoi need to ask the school about who will write the reference and you have a right to see your reference under the DPA. They will understand the significance, so maybe work out something with the school. It may be they are willing to forget it if you show enough contrition.

Referee absolutely can say negative things about you. They need evidence of anything negative.

References only have to be truthful. There's absolutely nothing stopping a school mentioning suspensions, lateness, attendance, or any disciplinary issues which they have a record of.

In OP's case, if he were staying at this school, they absolutely could mention it.

I'm in my 4th year of high school (I live in Italy) and next year I'll change school, so my referee won't be someone from my present school. They're not sure about suspending me yet, but I think they will
If you're changing schools, and the suspension won't follow you on any academic records and there's nothing that would come up on a police background check, then chances are it won't appear in your UCAS application and you'll be fine.

If you were staying at the same school and it was mentioned on your reference it would be considered a major problem- but you might perhaps be able to persuade unis it was a one off mistake. If they can see a pattern of drug misuse, it's very unlikely a uni would accept you to study medicine, so you'll need to be more careful in future!

Ditto what SlowlorisIncognito said - unless it's written on your UCAS reference or shows up on a police check, then it won't be a problem.

However, if you were to get caught smoking weed while you were a student of any heatlhcare subject, then you could run into fitness to practice problems - which could ultimately result in you being thrown off the course.

    I certainly hope so.

I am in my last year of GCSEs and was suspended for 1 day due to cheating. However, there were exceptional circumstances in that there were less serious, hidden mental health issues that contributed to my actions. Do you think that this would be mentioned in university applications or in references later on? If so, what effect might they have on my application?
