I see a therapist for my eating disorder as I got to a low weight. I'm now at a bmi of 16 (6 stone) but my therapist said that my body was shutting down that's why my periods have stopped. Can someone explain to me how my body is shutting down when my weight is not in danger zone?

Your body starts to shut down before you reach the bottom. That's how it begins to conserve energy, getting rid of the least necessary processes first. If your life is in danger, your period isn't the most useful thing for your body to be spending its energy on. And 16 is below what your BMI should be. Just because you're not at the stage of being hospitalised doesn't mean that your body isn't struggling (in my opinion the NHS leaves it far too long to intervene properly, but that's because the services are under funded). I hope you're being well supported to recover.

your body starts to shut down non vital processes fairly quickly once you become malnourished and unhealthy, at a BMI of 16 you're still very underweight and so your body isn't bothering to waste energy on non essential processes like your menstrual cycle, because lets face it at your BMI and likely levels of malnutrition you would be unlikely to have a healthy pregnancy/baby
