I'm Stuck

I'm currently a first year student doing joint Sociology/Criminology.
I've decided to transfer to do Psychology. This means I'd go back in to first year.
So far:

Oxford Brookes - conditional offer (I have to get a B in my Maths re-sit this summer)
Nottingham Trent- unconditional
Manchester Metropolitan- waiting
Herriot Watt- waiting

Herriot Watt is the highest on the league tables for Psychology which is great but I can't base my decision on that entirely. I'm leaving my current University because I don't like the lack of motivation on campus and the lack of work ethic. I want to be surrounded by people who want to be at University and who want to do well.
Now just because Herriot Watt is top of the leagues (out of my offers) doesn't mean I'm more likely to be surrounded by those kinds of people. I know that all Universities have students that are just there to kick back and get drunk, and I'm fine with that, I would just like to be somewhere where I'm challenged and pushed academically.

In light of this I was wondering if people could maybe share their experiences or anything they've heard about the Universities I've applied to?

I think I've seen this post elsewhere and may have answered it - but just in case I answered it in my head without actually submitting a post I'll try to cover the same points again.

Firstly congratulations on your offers. And congratulations for trying to look beyond league tables but also avoid a university environment you know would make you unhappy.

Have a look through the forums for each university on TSR (Heriot-Watt University, Oxford Brookes University, Nottingham Trent University, Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU)) current applicants and students will be posting there and so you should be able to get a bit more insight into the academic environment and work ethic.

Also the reviews on Which? University are worth a read to get a feel for strengths weaknesses around the environment you'd be studying in:
http://university.which.co.uk/heriot-watt-university-h24
http://university.which.co.uk/manchester-metropolitan-university-m40
http://university.which.co.uk/oxford-brookes-university-o66
http://university.which.co.uk/nottingham-trent-university-n91

Obviously reviews are subjective though so read them with a pinch of salt - I'm sure you would submit a very different review about your current uni and course to someone who is having a great time and finds it suits their interests completely

Lastly unistats will give you a bunch of other data (the stuff that feeds into league tables but with actual context and underlying information so you can decide if it is important to you or not) to compare the strengths and weaknesses of courses:

https://unistats.direct.gov.uk/Subjects/Overview/10004930FT-MC10-PX/ReturnTo/Search

Make sure to click into different tabs - the student satisfaction, employment, costs & accommodation and study information are usually the most interesting in my experience.

That is beyond helpful, thank you so much!

Hi briannafowlie

Just to add to this - at Heriot-Watt has an active Psychology Society which might give you a flavour of what the culture is like here.

They have a facebook page:https://www.facebook.com/HWPsychSoc/

I'm sure if you sent them a message that might get back to you with any questions you might have about student life from their perspective.

Hope that helps? :u:

Cheers

Sophie
Hi Sophie,

That's actually really helpful. I received offers from Heriot Watt yesterday and I could tell by my reaction that subconsciously it was my first choice.

Thank you very much!
