I don't know what you mean by special consideration? In terms of university?
For examinations? x
yeah for the exams apparently some people get it? like i know someone who got glandular so got special consideration. maybe im making crap up hehe but im sure it exists

Yeah this does happen, a girl in my school taking May '07 exams had a few health issues and she has been given special consideration. If you have familial issues etc. death, marriage issues in proximity to the exams, and you can justify it, then I'm sure it is taken into consideration.

However, I doubt there are concrete rules with this, each situation is as different as the next.

I get extra time in exams (approx 15min depending on the length of exam) because I have extremely slow handwriting and something else that I don't understand, but my mum does which means that I do most things quite slowly eg reading and writing. I don't get changes for the IAs though. To get this I have done testing and I gave it to my IBC who sent the info to Cardiff. I am also Nov 07 and I did this a couple month ago.

But you can also get special consideration for other things such as serious injury or sickness which significantly impared your ability to do work I know someone at my school has special consideration for a back problem and someone else has it for chronic fatigue.

My one is classified as D1 and the others are D2, hopefully you IBC would understand that.
Apparently if your parents died (God forbid), you get an extra point.

There's another extra point for something else but I forgot. If you have health conditions that affected your exams, the school can write a letter to IB along with your exams.

Is that a point overall? Or a point per subject? One point overall seems a bit stingy to me!
I got special consideration for my GCSE's all those years ago cos my Nana had just died, I kept having panic attacks and had a stomach bug, had to sit thru the whole of my exams with a bucket and a paper bag, not nice! It made absolutely no difference tho at all, the special considerations didnt affect my grades at all.
Why are you asking anyway, if u dont mind me asking? lol! x
This is a little pathetic. Concentrate on your studies - and stop trying to cheat the system.

I think this notion of "extra-time" is ridiculous. Why can't people just treat us students as if we were in business. Life is hard - get used to it.

I think the notion of "extra-time" is both perfectly plausible and fair. People with learning difficulties such as ADHD, autism and dysgraphia have a DISTINCT disadvantage over the majority of other candidates, and these are the majority of people who benefit from such a system. Western society supposedly strives for equity and I feel that such measures are a necessity to prevent people being further disadvantaged due to a learning difficulty. Perhaps if you were to take more time researching such an issue, you might avoid accusing people of 'cheating the system', which as far as I can tell no-one has explicitly proposed or even suggested.
In business, you don't get "extra-time" to complete a financial transation. It shouldn't differ for exams - it's unfair practice.

It's perfectly fair. IB students are not employees or business partners of the IBO.

Please get a grip.
Oh yeah, having panic attacks (after the death of your grandmother) and dyslexia is so very pathetic. Seriously JMoore, there's this thing called empathy. I'm pretty sure you wouldn't be saying this if it was you with the health issues that prevent you from working as efficiently as other people. Besides, in "real life" you're not [usually] locked in a room and forced to finish a piece of work in precisely one hour and without looking at ANY external resources or consulting anyone.

And the other way in which to get extra points is to get pregnant, apparently. I don't know if it's true though. But if it is (and you're female, you'd probably have problems with this if you were a guy) then why not. Pft, what's a baby when you can go from a 36 to a 37!!!! (yes yes, I'm kidding)

sitting exams isn't exactly doing business and dealing with millions of pounds. these students have a medical condition; if you were dyslexic you wouldn't be saying it's unfair practice.

edit: damn! the Luvbster you beat me

That's so sexist!

I want to get pregnant.

i wonder if they really give you an extra point if if your parent(s) died...

only one way to find out :ninja: lol

edit: osmosis dude, you want a baby?!?!

I'm glad everyone else agrees on this, apart from one individual . I think we would all agree, that we'd ratherbe perfectly healthy rather than have a bit of 'extra time' advantage in an exam. It is the only real 'saving grace' of having such a condition.
