Summer Internship rejection

If after completing a summer internship at a bank, and you have been told that you won't be put on their graduate programme for the following year: does it mean that you can kiss your chances of employment with that bank for good even though they say you can still apply to the graduate programme? Same for a spring internship?

Anyone working at a bank they have been rejected from during a summer internship?

This hasn't happened to me, but i am just speculating.

the answer to all these questions are 'depends'

Depends what you did in your summer intern - were you not hired because you're crap, or becuase it's cuthroat conversion and you didn't make a name for yourself right away.

Lots of people do an internship then move to another bank when for full time - for various reasons - it depends on whether you have the skills or not.

It depends. I know someone who worked for a bank in the summer, didnt get an offer but then got invited for an interview when applying like everyone else to the grad scheme. Mind you the reason they didnt get the job was because the team they worked in for the summer wasnt taking on grads as they were downsizing.

Im guessing if you didnt get the offer because of a real bad reason then of course they will remember you. Otherwise they wont. Most banks have a different person screening applications for each different area of the company, so I think it certainly will not rule out your chances of working for the company but it is highly unlikely you will be invited to an interview if you apply for the same thing as you did your internship in.

I would say that it was worth re-applying, the worst that would happen is that they may not interview you. If you can give a suitable reason then it will help.

Remember that they'll talk to your line manager and read your performance appraisal.

I have decided to intern somewhere that is hiring, that intends to take on all of its interns if they're good enough, will be on one of their number one desks, and one that is very respected in the industry. Should make the job thing slightly easier (fingers crossed).

I went for a Bulge Bracket this summer and already have that on my CV, so I choose my bank due to the above combination.

I got some rejection from some banks. However, my situation is fairly unique (I'll have done two summer internships by graduation and a few have asked me to keep in touch and are asking me to apply full time. I guess that means banks are happy to look at people again.

If you got to interview stage, think about the feedback - make sure you can't get rejected for the same reason.
