Received Pronunciation is much less defined to one region than other accents in British isles which are very region-based. I disagree, if children are taught from a young age at school to speak in a certain way, or face punishment, the children will grow up speaking the right way. There are difficulties with the idea making it impractical, but a gradual implementation is needed to correct the bad speech in most regions.
As a linguist I take exception with that particular word.

I take exception with the concept, but in particular that word.

You should not, RP has become favoured by employers looking when interviewing people, is most easily understood by ELS speakers, and is seen as a neutral choice when communicating with people. If people want to maximise their chances in life, RP is the right way to speak, regional accents do not boost chances, regional accents inhibit chances.

Did Aph not waste all our surveys. We had the political compass, somebody decided to waste one deciding how gay everybody is, and then I believe it was Aph that wasted the last one on something even more pointless.

No. I haven't done any. It was Nigel who did the social class survey which you are thinking of.

I agree, but I pointed that out on the one a noble chance (does he even exist anymore?) posted but Ray claimed it was a survey and not a poll... Hopefully he sees this is a poll.

And anyway, I don't appreciate you just assuming someone doing what you don't like is going to be me.

The one I did on social class was a survey; there is one slot left for a poll after this one is done.

Interestingly i know for certain that 5 Tory MP's are all in Yorkshire. Seems we're the party of the north.
Then there's me and TF SE, and Jammy East

    Hello !

Would be interesting to find out what part of the country we are all from ( i.e Wales South West , London , Scotland , Midlands etc ) So a MHOC Meet up could be more of a possibility ? Would be great to see if we could all get together but logistics and other factors are a problem .

Feel free to answer the survey
Personally, I don't care (voted - London ) - but for future reference the House passed this when IAS put forward a whole bunch of polls: http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/wiki...cument#Polling

Well thanks for throwing me under the bus Airmed.
    But yeah...
Culchie here - ye can usually tell even from the way I type sometimes...

Although my uncles in Kerry are worse, and my other uncle from Derrylin has a Cavan accent and it's class

Hazzer I like how it says Ireland.

    MRW it says Ireland:
Now then mucker. Ye see hi there's 2 wee definitions for a culchie and ye fit both of them. One, ye live in the arse end of nowhere. Two, ya don't come from Derry. So like everyone here is a culchie except me.

Right, that's me Derry speak done on TSR for the rest of the year like lads.
