Transition elements are between titanium and copper in the d block. Mg is in the s block and Al is in p block. The electrons that fill these orbitals define which block the element is in.

    Ie Mg, 12

    1s2, 2s2, 2p6, 3s2.

    3s2, therefore in s block

    Ti, 22

    1s2, 2s2, 2p6, 3s2, 3p6, 4s2, 3d2

    Therefore im d block
