Antibiotics, Probiotics, Antispasmodics, Me...

I've been on lymecycline [408mg, once each morning] since last Nov. This was initially for my skin and is now also in aid of IBS [two birds, one pill etc]. I was also on a regular one-off course of antibiotics [augmentin], either once or twice a day, for a week in Jan. I've just been put on an antispasmodic [mebeverine], 135mg, 3 times a day.

Now, I have a friend who was brought up in a completely holistic household and his mum is a homeopathic practitioner and as a result he is totally anti Western medicine, no painkillers, aintibiotics, nuthin'. He believes that if one does take a course of antibiotics they should follow it by taking probiotics, to balance the body's natural... something.

I rarely take his advice - not to be mean; for every day things I try and keep as natural as possible, but he believes in the complete spiritual side of homeopathy too and I simply don't - and a lot of this advice is more along the spiritual lines.

However! He was making some sense on this issue  So I was wondering - what, if any, possible effects could long term use of antibiotics have on my body? Would probiotics be of any benefit? Also, antispasmodics - could they potentially have negative effects? As much as I trust my doctors they're not very talkative and I don't have another review due till Aug so I don't want to call them just to feed my inquiring mind.

Any help appreciated, sorry for the length

he's a moron, and so is his mum.

however, there is evidence to show that with certain medications it is beneficial to take bacteria rich preperations to recolonise the gut and stve off nasty bacteria.
brewers yeast and yakult are the key two.
anything else and you may as well be drinking water.
