why does Al(CH3)3 exist as a dimer but B(CH3)3 doesnt ?

I think I'd put it down to hyperconjugation which stabilises the D3h monomer structure. Hyperconjugation into the pz from the C-H sigma bond will be much worse for aluminium - p orbitals radially extend in their axis, not much in others.
