    The biochemical conversion of Glucose, C6H12O6, into pyruvic acid, C3H4O3, is an important step in the TCA (Krebs) cycle which forms a part of the metabolic breakdown of glucose (to produce energy).
    Write a balanced equation for this conversion and show the structural formulas.

    a. Calculate the enthalpy change for this conversion using Hess’s law given the following enthalpies of combustion: [4 MARKS]

    1. C6H12O6 (s) + 6 O2 (g) 6 CO2 (g) + 6 H2O (l) ΔHcomb = -2821 kJmol-1

    2. C3H4O3 (l) +H2O+ 2.5 O2 (g) 3CO2 (g) + 3H2O (l) ΔHcomb = -1170 kJmol-1

    b. From the information given above, calculate the amount of heat energy released in kcal by burning 1g of glucose. You should assume that complete combustion occurs and the pressure = 105 Pascal and remains constant at 298oK. All combustion products are gases. [3 MARKS]

    c. Calculate the change in the internal energy U in kJoules/mol if this combustion took place in a closed system under equal pressure (isobaric). [3 MARKS]
