Hi,
For Financial Engineering/ Maths which would be better, the MSc in Financial Mathematics at University of Chicago or MPhil in Finance (Fin Eng specialization) at Cambridge?

I'd go to Chicago because, well, it's Chicago!

i was tempted to apply to chicago too...because its chicago
I do like the the justifications of Chicago. Cus its chicago. Usually folk come back with, whats the RAE (or equivalent) is it renound dept, whats the course like.

BTW, I would do Chicago to, because its Chigago, and cambridge is cambridge

i think cambridge is a dull city. i dont think i would slot in well with the upper middle class culture either, being northern and, well, usually drunk and loud. i have images of meeting some tsr snooty rugga bugga toff who shouts his mouth off and ill end up decking him and getting kicked out of the uni because his dad has given a tutor a fat cheque to get in and can now be bribed or blackmailed in a mafia-style relationship.

though having said all this, im sure they are lovely people who love a bit of tipple and banter in a friendly way, and im just prejudice.

Yet you went to Exeter...
Darrion, you can't go wrong with either. Really the choice should be big city vs. small city and America vs. UK. Whatever your preference is.

It's understandable that the majority of the respondents here would pick UChicago over Cambridge as the majority of the respondents here are British. But I think the "elite" students in some top US schools would choose to go to Cambridge over UChicago in a heartbeat. Being able to study in Oxbridge for the Americans is a boast to his/her credentials. The Gates schoalrship, for example, receives many applications from some of the finest grads from top US schools like Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Berkeley, to name a few, wanting to pursue grad schooling at Cambridge. The Gates scholarship is extremely competitive. UChocago is an excellent school but Cambridge is simply better -- in almost all angles you wanna see it.
Chicago, Chicago, it's a wonderful town!

They didn't write a song about Cambridge, did they?

They did NOT also write a song about London or Paris either yet I think everyone would agree with me that both London and Prais are more wonderful than Chicago.

My point is -- if given a choice, an Amercian would want to spend a year in the UK (or Europe), and conversely, a European (including the Brits) would be fascinated to spend a year in the US. I mean, if there is an opportunity. So, in this case, it's not so much about choosing the school, but more of the location of the school.
If they are both top Unis and the courses are both good then I dont see why you would have to consider it that much - if they will both open doors to the career you want then just go based on what city and uni you think you would enjoy more.

Personally, if i wanetd employment in the UK I would go with Cambridge, simply because every employer will know it - not sure i could say the same for Chicago - even if it is great.

April in Paris? Surely you've heard of it? Well there is a certain Clash song about London, but it isn't entirely positive. However I have never been to Chicago so I'll reserve judgement on it for now.

To be fair, I'm pretty sure there have been quite a few brilliant poems about Cambridge.
there's a song about oxford in the wind and the willows - that frog guy sung it.

Bah, you can't boogie to a poem.

Let me reiterate what was previously said... you can't go wrong with either. But bear this in mind: if you go to UChicago (a great school in my second favorite US city (after San Francisco), I also know the department is strong) and are looking for full time employment you will be competing and at a very strong disadvantage when it comes to sizing up against students of the prestigious Chicago Graduate School of Business whereas I don't think there'd be any sort of inferiority issues at Cambridge (at least not to that extent).

You've not heard the London Underground song then?
