Are we proper ******ed? or can we resit, I read somewhere that only first attempts count towards an honours degree but you can still resit for progression. Also is this not the case in the first year as it doesn't count towards the degree?
You can definitely resit in the summer but your mark is capped at 40%. Do you have a course handbook - most departments have them, all the specific rules are in there. xx
You're right about the first year not counting towards the degree.. its entirely a qualifying year. whether you get 40% or 90% makes no difference...
Resits happen in the summer holidays, though you will only do them if your overall average for the year is less that 40% i think.. you cant use them to improve your grades without needing to.
on my course (computer science), the good news is that they only take your average mark, so far Iv actually failed about 6 modules (we take 12 every year) but because I ace the others, Im still fine. Thats how all courses should be done!

It's not actually capped at 40%, at least on my course. Basically, the resit is only for progression, you keep whatever mark you originally got, even if it was 0!
But you're allowed to fail a module and still progress aren't you? So could you decide not to resit as there's no point? That's rubbish that you can't even raise the mark to 40. xx
Are you sure? That's wicked, but when I spoke to Dipa she gave me this massive complicated list of ways to progress and apparantly if you fail 2 you need to get over 45% and if you fail more than 2 you need to get 50% or something like that (I already failed MCS )
when I was doing physics (back in the day...) in first year I failed 2 modules (both at 37%) but my average was 51.5%, so I didn't have to retake anything. Second year... well let's not go there... thus I am now a compsci student! My tutor did have a massive flowchart when he told me I didn't have to retake anything. I've had a look on the uni website for the flowchart, but all I could find is this from the university regulations:
Progression
14. (a) The progression of candidates within their course of study shall be determined in accordance with Regulations 15-20. In the case of MSci, MMath, MEng, MPharm and BPharm degrees, however, the provisions of Regulations 15-20 shall be applied subject to such additional requirements relating to the level of performance to be achieved as may be specified in Supplementary Regulations.
(b) The progression of candidates for the purposes of an Ordinary degree shall be as determined in accordance with Supplementary Regulations governing such degrees.
15. Candidates who achieve the pass mark in each of the modules taken in the Qualifying, Part I or, in the case of the MSci, MMath, MEng and MPharm degrees, Part II Examination shall be permitted to proceed to the following year of the course of study.
16. (a) Candidates who fail to satisfy the requirements of Regulation 15 shall nevertheless be permitted to proceed to the following year provided that they have achieved:
(i) an overall average mark of at least 40% (where the individual marks contributing to that average are weighted according to the number of credits attributed to each module);
and (ii) pass marks in modules attracting in total at least 80 credits;
and (iii) a mark of at least 30% in each of the failed modules.
and (b) Candidates who fail to satisfy the requirements of Regulation 16 (a) (iii) may nevertheless at the discretion of the Faculty or equivalent Board concerned be permitted to proceed to the following year provided that they have achieved:
(i) an overall average mark of at least 50% (where the individual marks contributing to that average are weighted according to the number of credits attributed to each module);
and (ii) pass marks in modules attracting in total at least 100 credits.
(c) Notwithstanding the provisions of Regulation 16(a) and 16(b), Supplementary Regulations for particular courses of study may provide that, in the case of candidates registered for those courses, fail marks gained in certain specified modules may not be compensated.Where such candidates fail to achieve pass marks in the modules in question, they may not proceed without reassessment in accordance with Regulations 18 and 19.
(d) Regulation 16 (b) will not apply to any candidate who has a mark below 30% for a module and whose attendance on that module is demonstrated to be unsatisfactory.
So, you've got 3 options without retakes (at least officially, comp sci may work differently) 1. Pass everything. 2. Average of 40%; pass 80 credits; not less than 30% in each failed module. 3. If less than 30% in a failed module, must pass 100 credits, and have an average of 50% or over
