Blueberry juice can work as well i think

I've... never seen blueberry juice for sale. I'll definitely look out for that next time I go to the shops, thanks for the suggestion:smile: Also, thank you for being the only person so far to pay attention to the fact that I am allergic to cranberries and as such, can't drink cranberry juice!!

Right, so I'm avoiding tea, coffee, alcohol, coke, sex... Basically, everything I like.

So far I've made it through two out of six sachets. I'm still feeling miserable, but not as miserable. So fingers crossed I'll get over this by the time I finish the course and I won't have to see my useless GP...

By the way, a huge thanks to everyone for the advice. I've never had this before and it's reassuring just to know that it does go away eventually!

bicarb of soda

Haven't heard of this one for cystitis...? What are you meant to do with it?

Reply 24

Guys I think I can help you all, Im very experienced with Cystitis, after about 3 years of suffering from it once a month or so which was HORRIBLE! I can now say I hardly ever get it.

Basically what can cause Cystitis is: Sex, Stress, Tiredness, Lack of water intake, Too much acidic foods/juices and because it is a kind of yeast infection it can be caused by eating too much dairy products and wearing too tighter underwear and trousers.

I went to the drs about it and they were baffled as to why I was having it all the time, they were so confused they were going to use me as a study. But then I learnt to control it. Obviously with sex you cant really control it but the rest of it you can easily just change your lifestyle to be able to reduce your chances of getting it.

So those of you taking your exams and feeling the effects of it now you know why

I hope this helps any regular sufferers xx

Basically you disolve a couple of teaspoons of it in a glass of water. Its the same as the sachets, it doesnt taste very nice, so again just add squash with it xx

I've been drinking a lot of fruit juice lately - I thought I was being healthy! :frown: Should I cut back on this permanently, or is it just certain types of fruit juice I should avoid?

Reply 27

and avoid synthetic underwear
caffiene (sp?) can make it worse as can getting stressed about it
cranberry juice + lots of water should help

Ahh cystitis is a nightmare.... the bicarb thing worked for me, couple of teaspoons in a glass of water, tastes vile but does help. Also cranberry supplements, you can get them from health food shops. Drink absolutely loads of water and always go to the toilet as soon as you need to, don't hold on!

ok, u say u are on the pill, so im assuming u have sex, which just happens to be a cause of cystitis. just keep a check on when u are gettin it (to see if it is linked), go for a wee before and after, and try and have a shower after

You dont have to cut back on it permanently because I sometimes have fruit juice, the best type to drink is the concentrated one, not the one with bits in as that is more acidic. I would maybe limit it to one glass a day or something. It might not be the fruit juice that has given you it, it could be something else that I listed xx

Well, I've been happily drinking a litre of fruit juice a day along with unlimited cups of tea, which probably has something to do with it... I'll cut back on the juice, I guess. One glass, not one bottle...!:p:

What's the maximum tea/coffee intake I should be having? I live on both, especially during exams. (I.e. now!) I drink tea black, if that makes a difference.

I'm permanently tired and stressed, so that's not a new thing, but I have been increasing my juice consumption of late. And having more sex than normal - new boyfriend. I do have proper toilet hygiene (saw on netdoctor that could be one of the causes:rolleyes:) and I do tend to go to the toilet before and after sex. Having a shower after every session would be impractical though - because we tend to have sex first thing before going to bed and first thing when waking up. (Hope that's not too much information...)

That said, I've successfully avoided the boyfriend for a whole week. Which I can only assume is helping...

Am still struggling through the sachets... why does medicine have to taste so horrible?! Thanks for all of your advice so far - you've all given me something to think about.

Meep!
The only thing that really helps is antibiotics. I had it reccurring for about a year, and eventually it turned out that the infection I had was too resiliant to be affected by the sachet things AND the damn antibiotics they gave me. Different set of antibiotics later it was all better. I can't remember whether the sachet things affect the pill or not, I know I never had a problem, however most antibiotics will.

Me too :frown: I had so many courses of antibiotics over about 18 months I lost count. I then went to a different doctor, they instantly identified that my infection was resistent to my antibiotics, gave me some magic different ones and (touch wood) I haven't had it since.

My tips from experience... (more experience than I wish to remember  )
The second you feel it, drink a pint of water, two if you can manage. Weak cordial was always fine with me.
Then drink another pint every hour. Carry a huge 2 litre bottle about with you if you're out and about and sip continually. Its the only way to flush it out.
Go to the loo as soon as you feel the need - if you hold it in you're only letting the infection fester. :frown:
Those sachets worked for me once when it was only mild, but if they're not helping after 2 days or the full course (I cant remember which is shorter) then go to the doctor.

My doctor also told me that cranberry juice was a preventative but not a cure due to the acidity, however other people say it worked for them and Iv never tried it cos of what my doctor told me, so Im just passing info on here, I cant really comment personally.

If it gets *really* bad, sit in a lukewarm bath, the cooler the better but not uncomfortable for you, plain water no bubble bath or anything. If doesn't help clear it up, but gives you temporary relief when you're at that stage when you're at the end of your tether. I have no idea how it works, it was a tip from a friend, but it worked for me at 3am when I was crying out of sheer frustration!

The fact you have antibiotics left over from last time is probably why you've got it again ... you probably didn't fully get rid of the infection and it's come back.

You always must must must for any infection, take the whole course of antibiotics, even if your symptoms have faded and you think you're ok again.

Hope you're feeling better

Reply 35

I feel for you! Cystitis is the worst!

The quickest way to get rid of it, is to go to the doctor and get anitbiotics. But if you can't do that the sachets should be ok, don't know how long they take to work though, but they do tablet versions of the sachets which are probably not as bad as drinking that vile stuff! Drink lots of water, get some rest (there's nothing worse than feeling the way you do and having to be out and about getting on with things) and hopefully you'll start feeling better soon. When I had the antibiotics I was feeling almost completely better within about a day!

you should go to the doctors just incase, i ened up having an infection!

better to be safe than sorry, cos the powder doesnt get rid of it just stops the symptons

Nah, the last time i had it was over a year ago. And i know i probably shouldn't have stopped, but by the time i'd gotten a doctors appointment it was fading away and i thought i'd be ok!

How do you know if you have cystitis?

Basically Cystitis is a yeast urinary tract infection. It means you have to use the toilet all the time but when you get to the loo its like a couple of drops of urine and stings like hell which makes you think you need the toilet all over again. It's really horrible and I dont think I have had anything so uncomfortable in all my life, not to mention embarrassing because you think you smell. I would recommend you follow all the advice on here and that you never have to suffer from it ever! lol x

You KNOW when you have cystitis!

Stinging sensation when urinating
Blood in urine (not in all cases)
Urge to go to the toilet a lot.
