Oxford Union Secretary caught wrestling naked

OXFORD Union Secretary Benjamin Tansey has been fined and deaned after being caught wrestling naked with two other men.

The incident took place just before 3am on Friday 4 May in Lincoln College’s Grove Quad.
The second year PPE student and two other male students, one of whom was second year Philosophy and Economics student Joseph Moore, were crossing Grove Quad when they removed their clothing and began wrestling.

A nearby Lincoln first year student, who wished to remain anonymous, said, “Ben Tansey and two others came back from rugby drinks very drunk. They then stripped down completely naked and started wrestling together on the lawn. The porter then came out and told them to stop.”

The College porter on duty was alerted to the ruckus after spotting the students on CCTV. “We’ve got video cameras in the lodge,” he said.

Grove Quad is overlooked by some of Lincoln’s student accommodation. A first year student witnessed the incident from his room after hearing the commotion. “I was woken up in the early hours of Friday morning after hearing loud groaning noises and screams,” she said.

“My bedroom backs onto Brasenose Lane so I just assumed it was some drunk people walking past. However, after this had lasted a while I got out of bed to go into my front room which faces Grove Quad and found that there were people wrestling on the croquet lawn. I was very sleepy at the time but I could see that it definitely involved Ben Tansey and two other males. They appeared to be naked and wrestling.

“In terms of wrestling, they were on top of each other and rolling around on the floor. There were a few girls sat on the bench watching as well. It wasn’t something I wanted to watch. At this point the porter came out and appeared to be telling them off. The boys got dressed and left. I know that Tansey was then sent to the Dean although I’m not sure of the punishment,” she said.

The incident is the second time Tansey has been involved in naked wrestling in Lincoln this term.
A second year student who wished to remain anonymous said, “Unfortunately this has happened before. This is the second time they thought it would be a good idea.”

Another anonymous student added, “There have been two incidents this term of which this is the second. Both incidents have involved Ben Tansey and Joseph Moore.”

The porters confirmed the previous incident, saying, “There was one before.”

The Dean at Lincoln refused to comment on the disciplinary measures taken by the college.

A friend of Ben Tansey and Joe Moore said that the College authorities had considered a more serious punishment for the wrestlers. “The Dean considered banning them from the quad where students are normally allowed to sit on the grass,” he said. “But in the end he gave them a £50 fine each.” He also said that the Dean told the wrestlers that the College has some very interesting CCTV footage of their activities.

Oliver Munn, former Lincoln JCR President and college father of Tansey and Moore, said he would not be surprised if the fine did not deter them from indulging in further naked wrestling. “Ben is Ben and Joe is Joe,” he said. “Their antics have long ceased to surprise me. There’s virtually nothing I’d put past them.”

Tansey apologised for the incident but did not completely rule out a repeat of the behaviour. “I am sorry for my actions. They were out of character and I should hope never to do this again.”
Kate Denham, Tansey’s girlfriend, denies that any naked wrestling involving her boyfriend ever happened.
Joseph Moore and the other student involved declined to comment.
