We're bombing ISIS in Syria at the moment. We've been bombing ISIS in Iraq since sometime in Autumn 2014, and have extended it to Syria so we can target them in both countries instead of just one.

The US started bombing ISIS in August 2014 due to their advance across northern Iraq, and started bombing them in Syria since mid-late September 2014. ISIS captured large parts of northern Iraq and Syria around that time, and they were (and still are) persecuting minority groups like the Yazidis and Christians among others. We're involved for the same reasons the USA is really, we just joined later (much later for Syria).

The US and UK have also been involved in supporting Syrian FSA rebel groups, first with non lethal aid and later with weapons. That began in 2012 I think, because of the US and UK opposing the Assad government. That policy is controversial, due to it potentially aiding Islamist and jihadist rebels who fight alongside the FSA, and because of actual defections of rebels to jihadist groups.

And please completely ignore the post above mine by "JailTheBankers".
