    Hi TSR,

Recently had my coursework 1st draft back on elements of the gothic, which was focused on The Bloody Chamber. However, I only achieved a Band 4 with some elements of Band 5. I want to improve my work so it is a Band 5 piece in its entirety.

Here are the Band 5 criteria I'm missing:

AO2; Exploration of several features of form and structure with evaluation of how they shape meanings.

AO2; Exploration of several aspects of language with evaluation of how they shape meanings

AO3; Clear consideration of different interpretations of texts with evaluation of their strengths and weaknesses, and with significant supportive references

AO4; Detailed exploration of contexts of reception

Could anyone shed some light on these aspects of my essay and how I would implement them? I'm really trying to improve my grades but with to no avail.

    Many thanks TSR in advance.

Without reading your essay, I wouldn't know how to give you any specific points for improvement other than general tips and pointers.

AO2i: Try and link how form and structure work together. In order to improve this, I suggest that you don't write about them separately, but actually discuss them in a collective manner. I'm not too sure which text(s) you're referring to for this particular assessment but for example, Dracula is written in an epistolary form (letters, diaries, etc). This is form. Structure is usually plot and setting. So if you wanted to discuss how these makes it Gothic, you need to to say something of "diaries are the stream of consciousness for characters, so allowing readers to dive into the individual character's psyche..". Insert quote to explain that, whilst leading onto the plot and how diaries drive the plot forward.

AO2ii: Language is all to do with terminology such as pronouns, verbs, clauses, sentence types and functions, active and passive speech, etc etc. Since it is a literature essay and not a language analysis, I would stick to just verbs, nouns, adverbs and adjectives. If you're comfortable with clauses and syntax, by all means go for it. You need to discuss how these language aspects affect the reader's viewings of the novel.

AO3: Basically any form of literary criticism. So what other scholars have to say about the text. You use their words to support your claims. Then use another scholar to either support or disprove your opinion. For example, "your point", "Shaw agrees that..." then, "However, on the contrary, George believes". You are basically using critics to favour your argument, or to go against it. None is weaker or stronger than the other. As long as you can write it convincingly, then it will be OK!

AO4: So reception just means when the texts was published. This refers to the social, cultural and historical elements of the time the texts were published.

Very basic advice, but I hope I helped you in some way.

This is superb! Sadly, my coursework on TBC by Angela Carter was handed in today as it was the college's deadline. I'm hoping my teacher will see my attempts at improvement and improve its mark, possibly reaching Band 5.

However, I now have a week to work on my comparative piece on Dorian Gray and Perfume! And, in all honesty, this advice will be invaluable to me, personally. Teachers tend to shy away from explaining the mark scheme and it often gets on my last nerve. But yeah, this info will be taken into account during my week and I can't thank you enough for taking your time to help me out!

    Thanks again,
    Brad.
