I have a question about part of the method of recrystallisation. When you are filtering using a Butner funnel for the second time, why is it that you add a minimum amount of hot solvent (e.g. ethanol) to the crystals to redissolve them? What actually happens if you add more?

    BUCHNER

Too much solvent and all the solute dissolves and does not come back out when you cool it.
