Adding "the" before "hoi polloi" classes you as a member, I'm afraid.
    And proud to be one.

To be a common man, with a decent education and a passion for cynicism, is one of the great pleasures of this life!

To have been is perhaps a greater pleasure than to be

Time for a visit to pedants' anonymous methinks.
    'My name's X and I'm a compulsive pedant'

True social mobility is a damaging fantasy of the dark masses, I was born a common man and will return to the soil as one.

In the intervening period I will pour scorn on the gentry, swig pauper's gin and persist in my dellusions of grandeur - as it is much more fun.

A guy (a guest in my own home, no less) once referred to me as a 'pleb' because my French wasn't terribly good. The fact that he spent half his childhood in France didn't seem to make much difference. I said, 'I am indeed a plebeian - one of the people - and am proud to be so.' before hitting him over the head with a Shetland Cosh!

Ah, but it was more than just pedantry. It was to make a point. Granted, still a sizable amount of pedantry and pompousness, 'though.

Social mobility may be damaging (see Alain de Botton) but it's hardly a fantasy
