the pill

is it too risky to have sex without the pill? (obviously still using a condom)
From past experience from my current girlfriend. I would use the pill AND a condom.

The pill never worked for her.
It's not 'too risky', you just need to be careful that the condom doesn't slip off during.

Sex feels a lot better without a condom though (for both guys an gals), I would recommend going on the pill or getting the implant so you can be protected from pregnancy without having to use condoms. If you think you will have trouble remembering to take a pill everyday then the implant is a very good bet -GP sticks it in your arm and that's it, you don't have to worry about pregnancy for 3 years (I have recently got it haha).

If it doesn't slip off/break, no. I used condoms as my only method of contraception before getting a coil and never had a pregnancy scare. I know other girls who do the same without any problems. If you think you'd feel more comfortable having sex on the pill (or another method) then I'd recommend looking into it.

No form of contraception is perfect, so the question becomes 'is it reliable enough for me?'

Used properly, condoms are very reliable. They're reliable enough for me, but I am not you.

If they are not reliable enough for you - how bad would a pregnancy or a scare be for you? - then a wide range of alternative or additional methods exist. They have different reliabilities, advantages and drawbacks, so talking to a specialist in contraception can be helpful.
