I heard that someone at an interview was questioned why they haven't had a part time job and make it out to be a negative. I never knew that unis cared about this and I was wondering if it was true, that universities are more likely to give you an offer if you've had the experience of a job.

    Thanks

would look nicer on your personal statement, you'd look more well rounded/independent.However I don't think a part time job is ever a deal breaker.

That's a fairly unusual thing to come up at interview really- What course were they interviewing for?

For most universities, I wouldn't have thought it would matter, but perhaps they were talking about work experience and employ-ability and that's why this came up? From an employ-ability point of view it is a real negative, and for some universities I suppose this might be an issue.

Or had the person being interviewed asked about financial help or mentioned the cost of getting to interview? In this sort of case I can see "get a part time job over the summer" being one of the suggestions the uni would make.

Depends on the course. For some subjects (e.g. medicine, pharmacy) having experience of a customer-facing role can be a big plus.

Otherwise, I suspect it was more the interviewer's personal opinion coming over - there are many of us who think that people benefit in many ways (not just financially) from having a part time job. There's also the reality that graduate recruiters are rarely keen on people who have never held a job before - they tend to lack workplace skills.
