Explain EVERYTHING!!! this is key - refer to your sources - research around the topic to find recent sources and link this in with your essay.

We did our history controlled assessment on Ireland and got A* - even though I thought I had failed... Anyway - what I did was what I said above - link everything together, explain, to do this effectively use PEE (point, evidence, or explain, or PEEL (point, evidence, explain, link).

An example of recent sources could be political affairs that would link in nicely with the time period, is there anything that is similar that is happening today that was similar in your time period? mention it. As we were doing Ireland - some of it was politics based, I threw into my essay how the Scottish referendum may have been similar to what happened in Ireland.
