    Hi all,

I want to start the above degree in October and choosing the astronomy and planetary science route.

However I am worried that my maths skills will not be up to scratch

I completed GCSE Maths to A grade but havent done anything further with it.

    Will i struggle with MST124?

    Thanks in advance

You'll be fine with GCSE level as long as you put in the time and effort. Also, assuming you are doing S141 or the new equivalent(?) half of the course is even more basic maths to lead up to MST124. If you're in doubt there's a tester quiz on the website to indicate whether your maths is already good enough.

And if you're still in doubt, October is 7 months away - plenty of time to brush up/get ahead!

    Hi thanks for the reply,

What is S141? I cannot see that on the course guide for Q64.

    Thanks,

Ahh they appear to have changed the layout of the degree, so it might have been remade into S111/M140 or something. Either way, I wouldn't let it deter you. There will be maths in the degree and you'll have to learn more maths at somepoint (I'm coming to the end of MST224 now which makes MST124 seem easy), so i'd just brush up on what you know and maybe try to get PDF's of MST124 now to start early.

S141 is current general science based module for level one which I think is going to be replaced by a new module which is the "Plus a new 60-credit science module (planned for October 2017) that focuses on some of the key ideas in science." part of the Q64 description.

Excellent, thank you both for the useful info!

MST124 starts off assuming you know nothing, so its below GCSE standard and raises to just go beyond A level standard by the end of it. I done it two years ago and I remember the books were really good.

Also... you get to take the formula book into the exam...
