how many swimmers compete in as many events as Phelps? its not like every stroke or distance is the same either, they require different strengths and tactics and its definitely that Phelps excels in all of them rather than all strokes are basically the same and suit all swimmers.

Nobody is challenging Phelps' ability as a swimmer - we're saying the Games are skewed in his favour because he has the ability to compete in so many different events at once, thus collecting a stupidly high amount of medals.

It shouldn't be about the "amount" of medals won, rather than the consistency of winning them.
Bolt has won the most competitive event in the modern game 3 times in a row now, and that for me makes him the greatest Olympian in history, even if he "only" has 7 Golds.

Yes exactly. He has the ability. Most people in his sport do not have this ability however. You cant blame Phelps that he has the opportunity to compete in different strands of his sport although he still dominates regardless, something which you lot seem to think is very common for a swimmer. America probably has some influence on the amount of swimming events that get picked in reality anyway

Impossible to compare really, would probably go with Phelps if I had to choose one though.

Not blaming Phelps in the slightest but you can't tell me that it's the same thing.
Being the best at sprinting means you can compete in max 3 events (i.e: Bolt). Being the best in swimming means you can compete in 6 or 7 (i.e: Phelps).

Bolt is the greatest Olympian hands down. It's not even a contest...

    Running events:

    100m
    200m
    400m
    800m
    1500m
    5,000m
    10,000m
    4x 100m relay
    4x 400m relay

Plenty of running events if someone was as dominant as Phelps to do multiple events?

Do you honestly believe somebody could win Gold in the 100m and 10,000m?
They aren't even remotely the same...

Running can be categorised in to short, medium and long distances, and no athlete can compete in different ones.

You'll never see Bolt running 10,000m just like you'll never see Farah running 100m

The different swimming strokes argument is a weak one. Phelps is an anomaly not the norm.

How many swimmers usually win in multiple strokes?

I don't think point is a good swimmer will automatically dominate all events like Phelps, it's just by being a swimmer he had a opportunity most disciplines so not. Cycling is somewhat similar. Basically if you pick the wrong discipline you stand no chance of being the greatest Olympian. I think running is a bit different you can tell which distance and athlete runs just by looking at them, it's far more specialist than swimming bio mechanically.

Team GB up into second place though. We are a pretty awesome sporting nation, ignoring the fact we make up sports and then proceed to be decent at them, for our size and against comparable nations we do pretty well.

Phelps is a genetic freak and an anomaly. As far as I'm aware no other swimmer has won >4 golds in this games (I believe Hoszku got 4).

I'd say his athletics equivalent would be someone running the 100m, 200m and 400m alongside the associated relays.

2008 Olympics was the most ridiculous.

8 gold medals with 7 new world records and 1 new Olympic record. 5 individual events and 3 relay events.

When they show the athlete summary graphic before an event, they should have a stat next to the flag for each athlete which shows how many litres of juice is currently in their system

Yeah, that was just absurd. He had 6 golds and 6 world records in 6 days at one stage. I can't see anyone eclipsing what he achieved anytime soon.

Although, if the American gymnast Simone Biles can win 5 golds in this games than that would be incredibly impressive. She's unreal.

Bolt could easily go in for 400m if he so wanted to to be honest (except when the events are on the same night obvs), he was originally a 400m runner anyway. That would add a further 2 events in to his pouch. Also that is just not true though is it, Adam Peaty is the best breastroker in the world but he would stand no chance against Phelps in the other events. Phelps is a phenomena.

OK if you wanna be naive and have that opinion go ahead lol. Bolt holds the belt for absolute dominance in his sport but he's got little on Phelps in terms of being able to not only adapt his style (4 times) but to master it as well.

Phelps deserves credit for consistently competing in so many events and still dominating.
