This was set as an essay question but we haven't covered this area very well apart from watching lots of documentaries.
We normally discuss three different (broad) factors: for the first factor, I would say Communist expansionism including Domino theory, NSC-68 etc. and this would be the single most important factor
For the second, I thought it would be wise to mention the political pressure that the presidents were under, both from their own administration and other governments; I thought this could also be very important as a factor but slightly less than the communist expansionism
Lastly, US prestige- this was to be the least important reason but there is still enough evidence to argue for this
What do you think- do these factors seem reasonable?
