An electrolyte is the substance bring broken down in electrolysis, it is usually a molten or dissolved ionic substance. It contains metal ions that allow the electrolyte to conduct.

•Electrolyte: The compound, either molten or in aqueous solution, which conducts the electric current and gets decomposed by it. Sea water, which contains sodium chloride (common salt) dissolved in it, or dilute hydrochloric acid, is used as the electrolyte for the production of chlorine.
