When you try to find out which is the major product, do you just see which hydrogens are directly bonded to the carbon or do you take account of alkyl groups attached to the carbon as well?

    Thanks

Well I mean, it's both really.

Markovnikov's rule can be stated as "the hydrogen adds to the carbon stereocenter which has the more hydrogen atoms attached"

Or is can be also stated as "the hydrogen adds to the carbon stereocenter which has the least alkyl groups attached"

So really, you can take into account one, or the other, or both.

e.g. the right carbon has the most hydrogens so hydrogen will add to that carbon.
the middle carbon has the more alkyl groups, so bromine will add to that carbon.

I get it. Cheers for that

I was wondering since our upcoming chemistry exams are coming up if people wanted to be part of a chemistry whatsapp revision group. If you are interested either pm me or responded to this message
