I've started my application for Student Finance England for entrance to university 2016/17. I've run into some difficulty with this question:

Since 1 September 2013 has either your parents, step-parents or guardians husband, wife or civil partner lived or worked outside the UK and Islands or, in the case of an EU, EEA or Swiss national outside the EEA or Switzerland?

My parents have been divorced most of my life. My dad has not lived with me since then. He has not contributed any money (including child support) towards my upbringing.

I don't actually know where he lives. I'm don't think it's in the UK or EU but I don't know for sure. The only contact I have with him is email; I've emailed him before asking where he lives and he's always given very sketchy responses. He won't send any photographs. He might live somewhere in Asia, but he seems to move between multiple countries so doesn't have a permanent residence.

I don't know if he works or has any income at all. He doesn't contribute any money towards me or my family. I am entirely reliant on my mum's income (she lives and works here in the UK). I basically know next to nothing about my dad.

So I was going to answer 'Yes, they lived or worked elsewhere during this time' to the Student Finance question. If I answer yes, will I potentially lose out on any financial help? If I answered no to this question and it turned out my dad was living outside the UK, would I get in trouble and be denied funding?
