Hi, I have recently received offer from Newcastle to study computer science. Looking at their syllabus, it looks like they only teach java as a language. Anyone know if they teach C and C++?

Took a quick look and it looks like Java only. C/C++ are pretty similar to Java (except pointers) so you'll be able to pick them up no problem in a week or two if you wanted to.

Java seems to be in fashion at the moment because it's so widespread and teaches good coding habits.

It is strange they only teach Java, though. One would expect a computer science to be able to understand at least 2 languages to be able to realise when 1 is more suitable than the other and the strengths & weaknesses of both.

No they don't teach Java only, took a look at first year modules and they teach Java, Assembly and web development stuff like html, CSS and js. It'd be pretty surprising if they did one language, and also other languages aren't a huge step from Java, so you can still learn it yourself if they never do it, computer science is not about teaching programming language syntax, so you will learn everything/most things you need to know in general about programming theory, which should make you capable enough to learn other languages yourself,

Thanks for your replies, I took a look at more of their modules and it looks like there is an introduction to C in the Operating System modules. And you guys are right, once you fully understand a language the others just comes along.
