GCSE Maths Question - Do I have it right? watch

    • Thread Starter

You will be assessed on the quality of your written communication in this question.
Two years ago, a local council began renting out garden allotments.
The council owned 60 allotments of equal size.
The rent charged for each allotment was £150 per year.
In the first year, three-quarters of the allotments were rented.
In the second year, 80% of the allotments were rented.
Calculate the total amount of money the council collected in rent over these two years.
You must show all your working. [9]

9 marks question so it will be quite rigorous

    Year 1 - 45 allotments are rented - (3/4 of 60)

    45 x 60 - - 10 x 60 = 600, 5 x 60 = 300,
    600 x 4 = 2400 + 300 = 2700.

    Year 1 = £2700

    Year 2 0.8 x 60 = 48

    48 (allotments rented) x 150 (price per allotment) -- 48 x 100 = 4800, 4800 divided by 2 gives 2400, 4800 + 2400 = 7200.

    2700 (year 1) + 7200 (year 2) = 9900.

Did I explain my workings out properly? This was one of the reasons I didn't achieve a C in GCSE the first time and so I have to resit.

You have worked out the second part correctly but I'm not sure what you did on the first part. You just have to work it out the same way. 3/4 of 60 = 45. The price per allotment is £150 The total price that year is simply 150 X 45 which = £6750. Then you add it on the £7200 that you worked out correctly which = £13950 and that is your answer. I'm quite surprised that is 9 marks to be honest.
