My mum had one last year and she was in absolute agony, she had to go into hospital too

I dont think they're normally life threatening if they're treated quickly and effectively, but Im not sure to be honest

I dont think they are:
My dad had them, it was just agony and waiting for them to pass and dissolve etc.

However Im not a doctor, but isnt anything life threating these days? Im sure the doctors will know what to do with them, Dont worry.

They're not. The main, and probably only reason they're a medical emergency is because of the pain involved. Basically the duct that the stone is in goes into spasm because it's blocked, and hurts like hell.

Chances are they'll remove the stone(s) and she'll be fine.
